A partnership program between Mekelle University, Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Tigray Regional Health Bureau (TRHB), held a consultative workshop with key stakeholders on October 9th 2024 at Planet Hotel Mekelle. The workshop aims to disseminate the results of a health information systems (HIS) baseline assessment, strengthen partnerships with HIS stakeholders, and solicit input on CBMP activities and priorities. CBMP program implementation woreda and health facility heads, Tigray Regional Health Bureau Management, Mekelle University ACSH and College of Health Science Management, and invited HIS partners, including JSI/DUP, DHA, and ICAP participated in the workshop.
Dr. Abraha Gebregziabher, Chief Clinical Director and delegate CED of ACSH and Health Science College, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of quality data for informed decision-making and enhancing health outcomes, following a welcome speech by Mr. Teklit G/Tsadik, Director of the CBMP Program. Mr. Measho Gebreslassie, Training and Mentorship Coordinator of the CBMP Program, presented the overall objectives, program outcomes, and intervention packages of the CBMP. He also presented the HIS baseline assessment report, highlighting the impact of the war on the health information system, the current challenges, and priority interventions for the 2017 fiscal year. Mr. Measho concluded by highlighting that the war in Tigray has severely damaged HIS resources and infrastructure, reducing all woredas and health facilities that had previously achieved model or upper candidate levels to the lowest emerging status. He emphasized that coordinated efforts among all HIS stakeholders are vital to rebuilding and strengthening the system in Tigray.
Additionally, Mr. Solomon Niguse, Head of the Health Information System at the TRHB, and Mr. Kidanemariam Baraki, JSI/DUP focal person, presented the objectives, performance, priorities, and challenges of health information in their respective offices. A panel discussion followed the presentations, where participants offered insightful questions, suggestions, and recommendations, which were addressed by the panelists.
Finally, Professor Haftu Berhe, Chief Academic and Research Director of the Mekelle University's College of Health Sciences, highlighted the key takeaways, emphasizing the need for strengthened collaboration among all stakeholders to mobilize resources, strengthen ongoing initiatives in health information system, improve health data quality, and enhance the use of information for decision-making.
