A one-day workshop on safe and quality meat production is currently taking place at the College of Veterinary Sciences (CVS), in collaboration with the University of Bologna, Italy. The event commenced with engaging presentations from CVS and Abergelle International Export Abattoir, laying a strong foundation for productive discussions. Participants include municipal office heads, city beautification officials from Mekelle, Adigrat, Agulae, and Enderta towns, as well as meat inspectors from local abattoirs. Researchers from Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) and Tigray Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), alongside faculty members and students from Mekelle University, are actively exploring strategies to enhance meat safety standards across the region.

Throughout the workshop, key challenges and future directions for meat production were addressed. A significant outcome was the establishment of a working platform dedicated to law enforcement related to the meat inspection system. Additionally, a task force was formed to develop a comprehensive framework for monitoring and regulating informal backyard and roadside slaughtering practices. To support these efforts, microscopes, abattoir kits, and laboratory supplies were donated to Adigrat and Agulae abattoirs to facilitate the setup of mini laboratories for meat safety testing. These initiatives represent important steps toward strengthening the safety of meat supply chains and enhancing public health standards within Tigray’s communities.
