Integrating Biodiversity and Climate Resilience for a Sustainable Future

​Mekelle University’s College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Institute of Climate and Society, officially launched a high-level international conference today titled “Synergies for a Sustainable Future: Integrating Biodiversity Conservation, Ecotourism, and Climate Resilience.”
​The two-day hybrid event brings together global experts, researchers, and policymakers to address the critical intersections of environmental preservation and sustainable development.

Opening Highlights
​The conference commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Eyasu Yazew, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, followed by official opening remarks from Dr. Abdelkader Kedir, Academic Vice President of Mekelle University. Both leaders emphasized the urgency of fostering collaborative solutions to combat climate change while protecting Ethiopia’s unique biodiversity.

​From Discussion to Action
​While the first day focused on intensive technical presentations and academic exchange, the second day (May 15) will transition into the field. Participants will visit key ecological sites, including Haykimesal, Agulae, and the Gergera Watershed, to witness firsthand the impact of local conservation and watershed management efforts.
​By bridging the gap between virtual and in-person participation, this conference serves as a vital platform for sharing knowledge that will shape a more resilient and sustainable future for our communities and ecosystems.
