Mekelle University’s College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Institute of Climate and Society, conducted a significant field visit on May 15, 2026, as part of its ongoing international conference activities.

The excursion took place in the Atsbi and Dese’a areas within the Gergera watershed and aimed to provide participants with practical learning experiences focused on sustainable land management and climate resilience. The visit brought together experts, environmental practitioners, policymakers, and local stakeholders to observe successful environmental rehabilitation initiatives and exchange knowledge on sustainable natural resource management.

During the field tour, participants visited restored landscapes and enclosure sites where innovative and climate-resilient land management practices are being implemented. The program highlighted ongoing efforts to rehabilitate degraded environments while promoting the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.
Among the distinguished participants were Ametemariam G. Micheal, Environmental Policy Advisor from GIZ⁠�; Yemane Gebru, Tigray We Forest Manager; and G/her G/slasie Tsira’e, Natural Resource Manager of Wenberta Wereda. Their participation underscored the importance of collaboration among institutions, development partners, and local communities in addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development in the region.
Participants also visited biodiversity conservation sites and engaged directly with local communities and field practitioners. These interactions provided valuable firsthand insights into the practical application of sustainable environmental practices and demonstrated the critical role of community participation in natural resource management and climate adaptation efforts.
The program further included participant reflections and group discussions, allowing attendees to connect field observations with the broader themes of the conference. Discussions emphasized the importance of integrating scientific knowledge, community experience, and policy support to strengthen climate resilience and environmental stewardship.
The field visit is expected to contribute valuable insights to the conference proceedings and help shape future strategies and action plans aimed at promoting sustainable environmental management and climate adaptation in the region.
At the conclusion of the program, Professor Grimay G/Samiel, Dean of the College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources at Mekelle University, officially closed the session. He commended the participants and organizers for their commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices and strengthening climate resilience initiatives through research, collaboration, and community engagement.
