The Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions Students' Organization congress has been commenced this morning under the theme "Students' organizations for a better Ethiopia" in Mekelle University, Mitiku Hall.

Hayelom Seyoum, President of the Mekelle University Students' organization welcomed the guests and extended his thanks for partners.
Hayelom also revealed his regrets on the delay and interruption of education in Tigray for years due to the Tigray war and the stain that continues to date.
Heyelom , however, stated the students in the university are in struggle to win the challenges against all odds.
He also stressed on the need for national and international support for students and the university’s staff who are still on duty with their 17 months of salaries yet to be paid.
"We the students prefer peace” said Hayelom stating the need for stable learning and teaching process.

Michael Yabonesh, President of the Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions Students' organization, also noted his pleasure for representing the institutions in the occasion.
Mickeal underscored the role of students organizations in upholding students rights.
He also called for strengthening the students' organization as it paves the opportunity to practise leadership.

Dr Abdelkedir said postwar education demands different psychological treatment and the role of the students organization has been great in tackling the postwar teaching and learning challenges in Mekelle University.
During the opening session, Chief Executive for Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions Development Solomon Abrha (PhD) also extended his message for the students to think beyond their campus and equip themselves with the necessary elements for them to be competitive in the market.
Dr Solomon also indicated on the ministry's plans for reform and autonomy of Higher Education institutions as per the demand for reform stating that a lot needs to be done beyond the expansion of institutions in number.
The CEO said the students have a great role to end the conflict related problems all over the country and prefer peace and discussions to destructive alternatives.
He also advised the students to take this assignment to their respective universities.
Dr Solomon promised the Ministry of Education will continue supporting the students organizations while also thanking the outgoing members of the students' organizations.
This afternoon reports of past accomplishments, discussions on the reports, plans ahead and election of new members will continue.
