Mekelle University's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources recently organized a field day, bringing together university leadership, deans, researchers, and key stakeholders from the Tigray Agricultural Research Institute, the Tigray Bureau of Agriculture, and local farmers. The event showcased ongoing field trials on over 400 drought-tolerant wheat and barley varieties. It was announced that the College is in the process of registering five food barley varieties at the national level.

Participants were also informed about seed multiplication efforts for selected wheat and teff varieties, currently underway on more than 50 hectares of university land. As part of its community engagement initiatives, the College has been supporting 500 local farmers by providing improved seeds and technical training to enhance their participation in seed multiplication.

During the event, attendees explored ongoing research projects focusing on the performance of teff varieties under various fertility amendment practices, the selection of durum wheat and food barley varieties, and the seed multiplication of released varieties, including teff (Quncho) and bread wheat (King Bird).
