Mekelle University, in collaboration with two African universities—the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Makerere University, Uganda—and two German universities, the University of Kassel and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, has implemented a real-life experiment as part of the Collaboration for Active Mobility in Africa (CAMA) project.

The primary objective of this project is to promote active mobility in East African countries. Based on research findings, the project has introduced a real-life experiment aimed at enhancing walkability and bikability in the Kedamay Woyane area of Mekelle. This experiment facilitates safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, provides ample space for pedestrians and street vendors, and allocates designated areas for cycling. The goal is to expand similar interventions throughout other parts of the city, contingent upon the experiment's success.
In conjunction with the implementation of this real-life experiment, an international workshop was held at the Mekelle University management hall, where international, national, and local stakeholders participated. The workshop featured presentations on global experiences in active mobility—encompassing walking, cycling, and the implementation of city living labs—by German professors, as well as insights into Kenyan experiences, findings from Addis Ababa, and research on active mobility in Mekelle. Additionally, panel discussions among participants explored the challenges of active mobility practices and proposed potential solutions.
